Are you using the right bandsaw blade for the job?

Are you using the right bandsaw blade for the job?

Are you using the right bandsaw blade for the job? Over the past few weeks, I’ve fielded several calls asking just that. While many of our customers already know the exact TPI required for their work, others are looking for a little more guidance. I’ve put together this guideline to help eliminate the guesswork and ensure you select the best blade type for your specific cutting requirements.

The Anatomy of a Bandsaw Blade:
  • Blade back: The main, flat body of the blade, opposite the cutting edge. It sits against the blade guides on the saw and provides structural support.
  • Teeth: The cutting part of the blade. Their shape, size, and material determine the speed and quality of the cut.
  • TPI (Teeth per Inch): The number of teeth in an inch of the blade's length. A lower TPI (coarse pitch) is for faster, rougher cuts in thicker materials, while a higher TPI (fine pitch) is for smoother, slower cuts in thinner materials.
  • Blade Width: The measurement from the tip of the tooth to the back of the blade. A wider blade provides more stability for straight cuts and resawing, while a narrower blade allows for tighter radius.
