Tight Squeeze & Teamwork: Offloading a CNC VMC into a Classroom
When a partner UK machinery supplier reached out to us recently needing a hand with a tricky machine installation, we were more than happy to step in and assist. They had a CNC Vertical Machining Centre (VMC) bound for an educational client, but getting it into its final location presented a real engineering puzzle.
Site Inspection & Prep Work Before moving any heavy machines, Charles and Liam went on-site to meet the customer, assess the building layout, and map out the access route. The main hurdle was the entry door. The supplier had advised that to make the tight squeeze possible, the VMC had to be stripped down to a maximum width of just 1.9 metres. After carefully reviewing the machine with the customer and mapping out the safest route, our team dismantled the necessary components, as advised by the supplier/manufacturer, on-site to get the unit down to size before making the move. Precision Execution: 20mm to Spare On installation day, Charles, Liam, and Cian were ready to execute the plan. The critical point came at the doorway. Even with the machine stripped down, there was a mere 20mm of clearance on either side. Moving heavy industrial equipment through such a tight opening demands experience, heavy duty lifting skates, and total control. Working together in tandem, the lads guided the VMC through the opening without a mark on the doorframe or the machine. Once positioned safely inside the classroom, they carefully reattached all the removed parts, leaving the VMC fully assembled and ready for the next generation of engineers.
